Plane Crash, 1940s
The lady standing near the wrecked plane is Bernie Hadfield, familiar to nearly everyone who ever spent much time in Naknek. Bernie is standing by the plane with a dog team. Her husband, Bob Hadfield, had been a passenger in the plane. The pilot was attempting a landing at Airplane Lake in Naknek. It went partially through the ice on landing, nosed up and damaged the engine and landing gear. Mr. Hadfield's arm was seriously injured in the crash.
The airline was Woodley Air and the plane was a Travel Air 6000B. Although the photo is dated 1946, the crash probably occurred earlier than that. If anyone knows more about the crash, we welcome your email.
