Cape Seniavin, Bristol Bay, 1978
Cape Seniavin is a point on the north side of the Aleutian peninsula in the Bering Sea, 500 miles southwest of Anchorage. Its name commemorates Dmitry Nikolayevich Senyavin or Seniavin (1763-1831), a Russian admiral who ranks among the greatest seamen of the Napoleonic Wars.
Yesterday's photo featured Seniavin, also, and its walrus occupants. Cape Seniavin is one of four or five major walrus haulouts in the Bering Sea area. This 1978 photo was taken of Cape Seniavin, ironically enough, from the tender Walrus on the trip south.
