Traveling in Style - Naknek, 1929
This was taken in 1929 and shows Martha Monsen on the right and Mrs. Larson (Captain Peter Larson's wife) on the left, standing in front of the cannery's Dodge. Captain Larson was Naknek Packing's superintendent from around the late 1920's through the early 40s. The car is believed to be about a 1924 Dodge Touring Car. This was probably the first auto in Naknek. The local kids sometimes chased the car and caught rides, hanging onto the spare tire on the rear.
The superintendent's house was at the Naknek plant. The car was used for transportation between the canneries (Naknek Packing and Red Salmon). The old road ended about where Delta Western's plant is now. In the April 14, 2005 photo of Naknek Packing you can see, just to the right of the tugs on the ways, a small shed-roofed building. That was the garage for the car.
The road was later extended below the ways winch platform, to near the store.
