Weighing Salmon on the Pelican
This was taken on the Pelican in 1984. Fishermen deliver their catch to the tender in a basket called a brailor, such as you see in this photo. The brailor is then hoisted up and the fish are weighed. (That is what the man on the tender is doing.) Canneries pays for the fish by the pound.
This type of brailor, made of net, is no longer used because it damaged the fish. Now they use a type of canvas basket. (See July 8, 2005 for a good example.)
