| Beluga Whale, Naknek River | ||
| Hundreds of Beluga whales have been coming into the Naknek River daily, riding the tides in. They seem to be feeding on small fish, possibly herring, smelt or outgoing king salmon smolt. Their white coats contrast with the color of the water. Beluga whales are small white whales that grow to be about 16 feet long on average, weighing up to about 3,300 pounds. Their name derives from a Russian word which means "white." | ||
