Soldier, rest! Thy warfare o'er, Sleep the sleep that knows not breaking, Dream of battled fields no more. Days of danger, nights of waking. ~Sir Walter Scott | ||
| Freedom is not free. Memorial Day is a time to honor and reflect on the sacrifices made by Americans in combat. Take some time today to remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. | ||
| This photo was taken at the Second World War Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, which is located in Hamm, Luxembourg, about five miles from Luxembourg City. The cemetery is the final resting place for 5,076 American military dead, including General George S. Patton. There is also a memorial to 371 Americans whose remains were never recovered or identified. | ||
| The ground on which the cemetery rests was liberated by the U.S. 5th Armored Division in September, 1944. A temporary military burial ground was established and later the construction of the permanent cemetery was completed. Most of the soldiers here were killed in the Battle of the Bulge. | ||
