Net Hanging
This is almost always an annual task for fishermen. According to the regulations of Alaska Fish and Game, each setnetter is allowed to fish 50 fathoms of net. Each drifter is allowed to fish 150 fathoms. Net wears out after one or two years. The used nets are then cut off the corks (white objects in photo) and leadline and new net is attached. Most fishermen do this themselves, though many hire it done for them. The process is fairly involved and requires a certain amount of skill. This net is 25 fathoms (150 feet) long. On one this size, there are over 250 knots to be tied on both the corkline and the leadline, respectively, for a total of over 500 knots.
