Cowboys of the Sea
National Geographic Channel recently featured an hour-long program titled "Cowboys of the Sea" in late February and early March. It was filmed in Naknek during the most recent commercial fishing season (summer of 2006). The program is well worth seeing, if it shows up again on TV.
The National Geo crew followed three drift boats throughout the season. The program was described it as "three captains must battle the elements, fiery competition, and the law during the 2006 sockeye salmon commercial fishing season in Bristol Bay, Alaska. For six weeks every summer, the tranquil Naknek River mouth becomes a bustling epicenter of commercial salmon fishing. Hundreds of fishermen come every year to stake their claims. The fishing district is small and the payoff can be huge. Captains have been known to make six figures in six weeks. One of the most competitive fishing seasons in existence."
The photo above shows the TV crew aboard the boat, along with the working fishermen. This boat, the Claude M Bristol, was featured much of the program. This (above) is a detail photo cropped from a much larger shot. The larger photo shows more of the fishing action surrounding the boat. We will post it on the site tomorrow.
