Mount Veniaminof
This is an aerial view of Mount Veniaminof, one of the most active volcanoes on the Alaska Peninsula. It was named for the Rev. John Veniaminof (1797-1879), a Russian Orthodox priest of Irkutsk who was a missionary to Alaska. He is also known as Saint Innocent of Alaska. He is known for his ethnologic and linguistic studies as well.
Both the mountain and the man for whom it was named are worth further research, for those who are interested.
