The River Lethe
This is the Lethe River, Valley of 10,000 Smokes, in Katmai National Park and Monument. R. F. Griggs of the National Geographic Society named the river, in 1917, after the Lethe River in Greek mythology. In mythology the Lethe is one of the rivers that flows through Hades. It was referred to as the "river of oblivion" from which the dead drink in order to forget their lives on earth.
This river Lethe, in the photo, can be extremely dangerous because it is narrow, cut deeply into the rock and flows very fast. People have lost their lives underestimating it and attempting to jump over it.
This photo was snapped during the annual 6th grade trip to Katmai National Park and Preserve, Brooks Camp. Every year the Brooks Camp trip is the one of the culminating activities of Bristol Bay Borough Schools' 6th graders.
