Another Look at Buildings in Naknek, c. 1940
This labeled photo of Naknek is taken from north of the village, in about 1940, looking south toward the river.
  1. Cannery workers bunkhouse and mess hall
  2. Beach gang bunkhouse
  3. Current Delta Western warehouse - back then the first floor was the mess hall provision house and the front half was a lumber and building storage warehouse, while the upper floor was the net and sail loft
  4. Emil Gustafson's house, later Kihle's
  5. Mess hall which was used as a summertime theatre by Goss after no longer in use by the cannery during the late 1930's
  6. Naknek Packing cannery building which was torn down in late 1940's.
  7. Herman Carlson's house, later Henry Miller's and Coghill's
  8. Fishermen's bunkhouse, later used to store case and aviation gas by the Red Salmon Store
  9. Wireless shack, later Mike Shapsnikoff's and utilized by the MPs during the early part of the war
  10. John Stenwall's house, later expanded to include his public sauna
  11. Also built by John Stenwall was Davey's Bar and later became the Village Bar (now Alphus's)
  12. Davey's Liquor Store
  13. Billy Hill's house

  15. Johnson's house
  16. Jail
  17. Teacher's cottage
  18. School, later Naknek Civic Club and now community club, was moved to new location in late 1950's
