Fred Kraun (1929-2007)
On June 5, 2007, Frederick (Fred) Julius Kraun, a fixture in Bristol Bay, passed away in Issaquah, Washington. Fred was born in Naknek on February 4, 1929 to Frederick and Nina Kraun. Fred was a positive influence to many in Bristol Bay.
Fred was born and raised in Naknek, where he attended school. He was involved in commercial fishing at an early age, setnetting with his mother, then fishing sailboats and, later, power boats. He served in the Korean War. He was a pilot for Alaska Airlines until his retirement.
He owned and skippered two boats over the years. His boys fished with him for over 30 years. In 2001 he was named Bristol Bay's "Salty Dog" at the Fishtival festivities. The Salty Dog Award is sponsored by the Bristol Bay Historical Society and recognizes an individual who has been connected with and made significant contributions to the fishing industry in Bristol Bay over a long period of time.
Friends are invited to share memories and sign the family’s online guest book at www.flintofts.com.
