APA's Cachalot in Ketchikan
This is a recent photo of the old Bristol Bay Alaska Packers' tender, the Cachalot. She was photographed in Ketchikan.
APA named their tenders after marine mammals. Thus, their lineup of these similar tenders included the Orca, Blackfish, Finback, Manatee, and Narwhale. Cachalot is another name for the Sperm Whale, or Common Cachalot. The word "cachalot" is originally Portuguese ("cachalote").
The name appears in American history, also. Another boat of the same name, the USS Cachalot, was one of the "V-boats" of the United States Navy. The V-boats were a group of submarines built between World War I and World War II for the United States Navy. The USS Cachalot was undergoing overhaul at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. She suffered no damage but one of her men was wounded.
