Dumpling and Griggs, Katmai
Katmai National Park and Preserve was created to preserve the famed Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. This park covers four milion acres, and is a half hour from Naknek/King Salmon.
In the center of the photo, rising to 2,440 feet, is Dumpling Mountain. Dumpling provides a "user-friendly" hike from the campground at Brooks Camp. Looming behind Dumpling, in the background, is Mount Griggs (7,600 feet). This mountain is named for Dr. Robert Griggs, who led the The National Geographic Society's exploration of the area in 1916.
