| The Dorothea, Leaving the Gulf of Alaska, 1977 | ||
| This photo was taken out on the Gulf the day after yesterday's picture of the day. This was also taken from the Marmot, who was following Dorothea south. Dorothea had navigation equipment that the Marmot didn't. Compasses on tenders could become inaccurate without professional calibration. | ||
| Under that tarp in the photo above, among other things, were many items containing iron, such as boat engines heading south for a rebuild. Pair that with those two booms which are typically raised and off to the side, now laying flat together, and one can imagine the effect on a magnetic compass. Thus it would have been very easy to get off course, which could have disasterous consequences. | ||
| Note that this is about as nice as the Gulf of Alaska can get. It also has another face. | ||
