"Father of the Iditarod"
This life-sized bronze statue of Joe Reddington Sr. stands outside Iditarod headquarters in Wasilla, Alaska, one of the fastest growing areas of the state. Traditionally Wasilla was the starting point of the competetive portion of the 1,100 mile race.
Economic growth of Wasilla, with increased roads and traffic and also warmer temperatures the past few years has made it necessary to move the starting point of the race 30 miles farther north, to Willow.
The ceremonial start of 2008 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is scheduled for Saturday, March 1, 10:00 a.m., in Downtown Anchorage. The competitive race begins in Willow on Sunday, March 2, 2:00 p.m.
