These large chunks of ice form during cold snaps. They're referred to as "anchor ice." This is because they hold the drifting sheets of ice in place, making it possible for the the Naknek River to freeze over. The photo above was taken last year. This winter, the weather hasn't been cold enough to form many chunks this large. (Note: Anton Littau, standing by an ice chunk, left side of photo.)
