Penguin Dip

One popular event during the annual Winterfest in Bristol Bay, is the Penguin Dip. The participants dive into the extremely icy waters of Airplane Lake in Naknek. A hole through the ice is provided for them. It will freeze up within hours. (Notice that the divers are required to wear a safety rope around their middles.) On the day this was happening, the temperature was about 10 degrees (F) above zero, with a 25 mph wind.
