| Winch House in the Woods | This is the winch house, by the ways. (Ways are inclined structures or tracks upon which large boats are supported in moving them from the beach to the shore.) The red chimney is part of the steam boiler. The large winch, used to pull the boats up and launch them, via the ways, remains in the building. At one time there was a permanent complex of Bureau of Fisheries people stationed at this location, about two miles east of South Naknek, on the Naknek River. This has been abandoned since the 1940s. It is located close to today's powerline crossing. |
