Anchor Ice as It Was in Early February, 2001
This is a popular picture that was used on the site in 2001, at this time of year. The large chunks of ice form during cold snaps. They're referred to as "anchor ice." This is because they hold the drifting sheets of ice in place, making it possible for the the Naknek River to freeze over. This winter, the weather hasn't been cold enough to form many chunks this large. (Note: Anton Littau, standing by an ice chunk, left side of photo.)
