| Two Common Loons (Gavia immer) in the Early Morning Fog, Naknek Lake |
| Loons have a characteristic call, which is unforgettable. The sound has been described as wailing, yodeling, or insane laughter. These birds are goose-size and swim low in the water. They feed on fish and are excellent divers. A loon can remain underwater more than a minute. They have been known to dive several hundred feet below the surface of the water. Loons mate for life and return every year to the same area to breed. They are very territorial and usually only one pair will be found in a small lake. They prefer to stay away from humans. |
