Northern Yarrow Achillea borealis, Naknek, Alaska
Yarrow is one of the most popular herbs for use in herbal medicine. It has a long history of healing wounds - thus its Latin name. The Greek hero Achilles is said to have used yarrow leaves to heal his own heels as well as the wounds of his soldiers.

It has a high tannin content which helps constrict blood vessels and control bleeding. Powdered leaves and flowers were snuffed to help control nosebleeds. It was used during the Civil War, where it was called Soldier's Woundwort.
